"Burgundy" was a surprise late arrival. Hours after mom was thought to be done giving birth, Burgundy decided to arrive fashionably late. She was the runt of the litter although she did a lot of growing and catching up. So much so that by the time I first saw her at just shy of 8 weeks, she was at no size disadvantage to her 6 siblings! In conversations with Sue, the breeder, we referred to her as "Caboose".

My intentions with Quinn and her litter mates was to test them with the "Puppy Aptitude Test" (www.volhard.com) to determine which of the pups (specifically a female) would be most suited to a career in obedience and agility. Pretty much right from the get-go, burgundy caught my eye. I was totally smitten with her but I wouldn't allow myself to get attached to the idea of her in anyway knowing that I still had the tests to do and evaluate.

In Quinn's litter, there were 4 boys and 4 girls (one of the girls didn't survive, you can read about her here - kleenex warning!), I was planning on temperament testing only the girls, but ended up doing all of the boys as well! It was quite the experience. My actual choice of puppy was really between burgundy and green. The red girl had traveled to the Rainbow Bridge and Pink girl didn't appear to be suited to an agility career at the time. Green is a little spitfire with a super sweet personality. At 3 1/2 weeks, green was climbing up the sides of the x-pen she was in!! Definite agility prospect!

Ultimately I made my decision based more heavily on personality than ability. With the 4 cats already established in the house, I needed a dog with the kind of temperament that would mesh well with them as well as our current elkhound, Monty. Burgundy also showed the most willingness to want to work with people out of the litter, which was very encouraging. I could see such fantastic potential in both burgundy and green - especially green. I hope that her new family takes the time to work with her in dog sports - she'll be a natural! Burgundy will be a steady, dependable dog - just what I'm looking for in a dog right now.

She's been with us a week today as I type this and we're working out a lot of kinks on the housebreaking front, but I think she's getting a handle on it. She's smart as a whip - already sits and waits (sort of) quietly for her supper and to be let out of the x-pen.

She experienced her first rain shower yesterday and it was so amusing. There wasn't a hope of getting her to go to the bathroom (the intended purpose for which we had ventured outside in the first place). She charged out the door as is the norm for her and came to a skidding halt on the patio and looked down at the ground watching the rain drops splash about her. No amount of encouragement from me was enough to break her concentration...then she seemed to realize that the water below her was originating above her. She turned her head up and snapped at the raindrops as they fell around her - whirling around to snap at the ones that dared to fall on her! It was truly priceless...and of course, as it was raining, I didn't have camera in hand at the time.
